What each part does and how to check it
Brake fluid reservoir
Location: At the rear of the engine bay on the driver’s side, with a yellow brake symbol on the cap.
How to check: Make sure the fluid sits between the MIN and MAX marks visible on the reservoir.
Safety note: Low brake fluid can indicate a leak or brake wear, so have it checked if it needs topping up frequently.
Engine coolant tank
Location: Just in front of the brake fluid reservoir. It is the largest bottle in the engine bay and normally has a black cap.
How to check: Only check the coolant when the engine is cold. The level should sit between the MIN and MAX marks.
Important: If the car frequently needs coolant, it may indicate a leak or another engine problem.
Engine oil dipstick
Location: Near the centre of the engine bay and identified by its yellow handle.
How to check: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then remove it again and check that the oil sits between the two notches.
Top-up: Add the correct oil grade through the filler cap next to the dipstick and avoid overfilling.
Screen wash reservoir
Location: At the front of the engine bay.
How to check: Open the cap and visually check the level. There are usually no MIN or MAX marks.
Tip: Keep the reservoir topped up with suitable screen wash so you can maintain a clear view in all weather.
