How the test works
Understanding the Car Theory Test
You normally need to pass your theory test before you can book and take your practical driving test. The test has two sections: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception.
You must pass both sections at the same appointment to pass the theory test.
Multiple-Choice Questions
- 50 questions in total.
- 57 minutes to complete the section.
- Pass mark: 43 out of 50.
- Questions cover road rules, signs, safety and vehicle handling.
Hazard Perception
- 14 video clips showing everyday road scenes.
- The clips contain 15 developing hazards.
- Pass mark: 44 out of 75.
- You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard.
Video Case Study
- One part of the test uses a short, silent video clip.
- You answer 3 multiple-choice questions about the scenario.
- The questions assess how you apply road-safety knowledge.
- This forms part of the 50-question multiple-choice section.
How to Click Safely
- Click when you see a potential hazard beginning to develop.
- Earlier correct responses receive more points.
- You do not lose points for an occasional incorrect click.
- Continuous clicking or clicking in a pattern can score zero.

The theory test checks more than your ability to remember road signs. You need to understand how to recognise risk and make safe decisions in everyday driving situations.
The Highway Code
Learn the rules of the road, road markings, speed limits, stopping distances and responsibilities towards other road users.
Road Signs
Practise recognising warning signs, regulatory signs, information signs and road markings without relying on guesswork.
Hazard Awareness
Look for clues such as pedestrians, parked vehicles, changing traffic lights, junctions and restricted views.
Safe Driving Knowledge
Revise vehicle safety, weather conditions, vulnerable road users, motorway driving and what to do during emergencies.

How much does a car theory test cost?
The official DVSA car theory test currently costs £23 when booked through GOV.UK.
What is the theory test pass mark?
You need at least 43 out of 50 in the multiple-choice section and at least 44 out of 75 in hazard perception. You must pass both sections at the same appointment.
How long does the theory test take?
The multiple-choice section allows up to 57 minutes. You then complete the hazard perception section, along with the test instructions and introductory videos.
Can I book my practical test before passing theory?
Most learner car drivers must pass their theory test before they can book and take a practical driving test.
How long is a theory test pass certificate valid?
A theory test pass is normally valid for two years. You need to pass your practical driving test within that period or take the theory test again.
