How to Amend Your Driving Test Booking
Understand the 2026 DVSA rules for changing your test date, time or test centre, including the two-change limit and three-nearest-centres rule.
Three major driving-test booking changes
Different parts of the new booking system came into effect on different dates during 2026.
Two changes per booking
You can make a maximum of two changes to an existing car driving-test booking.
Learners manage their own tests
Only the learner taking the test can book, change, swap or cancel the appointment.
Nearby test centres only
A car test can normally only be moved to one of the three nearest centres, the same centre or the original centre for the booking.
You can no longer move your test anywhere in the country
When changing the location of a car driving test, the GOV.UK booking service will normally allow you to:
- Keep the test at the same test centre
- Move it to one of the three nearest centres to its current location
- Move it back to the centre where the current booking originally began
The three nearest options are recalculated from the centre where the test is currently booked. This means your available centres can change after your first move.
Why has DVSA introduced these rules?
The changes are intended to stop appointments being booked speculatively at test centres learners never intended to use.
Previously, some learners and third-party services booked any test they could find, sometimes hundreds of miles away, before attempting to move it to a more desirable centre later.
This contributed to appointments being held in lower-demand areas and then moved or resold elsewhere. Restricting changes to nearby centres makes this approach far less effective.
You can only make two changes
The following actions count as a change to a car driving-test booking:
- Changing the date or time
- Changing the test centre
- Swapping the appointment with another learner
Changing the date and test centre during the same transaction counts as one change rather than two.
Once both changes have been used, you must cancel the appointment and make a new booking if another change is needed.
Changes that do not use your allowance
Some administrative updates do not count towards the two-change limit:
- Updating your address or contact details
- Adding or removing your instructor’s reference number
- A change made by DVSA, such as a cancellation caused by severe weather
Do not book a distant test expecting to move it later
You can still initially book a test at any available centre, but moving it afterwards will be restricted to centres near that booking.
A test booked far from home could leave you confined to that region. Your preferred local test centre may not appear as an available option.
Be cautious with cancellation-finder apps
DVSA does not allow unofficial services, bots or automated tools to scan its booking system for appointments.
Even where a service claims to find an earlier appointment, the location may not be one of the centres you are permitted to move to.
The safest approach is to manage the booking yourself through GOV.UK and check only the locations offered within your account.
Before paying for a service, ask:
- Is the service permitted to access the booking system?
- Can it search only the centres available to my booking?
- Could using it breach the booking terms and conditions?
- Would checking GOV.UK myself be safer?

Access the official service using your own booking details.
Check your remaining changes
Review how many changes are still available before proceeding.
Review the available centres
The system will show the locations your booking is permitted to move to.
Choose carefully
Confirm the replacement appointment only when you are certain it is suitable.
Save your confirmation
Check the new date, time and location and retain the confirmation email.
Change or cancel your test through GOV.UK
Only the learner taking the test is permitted to manage the appointment.
Book the right centre from the beginning
Speak to your instructor before booking or changing a test. Choose a centre that suits your lessons, experience and local road knowledge.
Do not rely on finding a distant test and moving it closer later. The geographical restriction means you may be unable to return the appointment to your preferred area.
Use GOV.UK, choose your centre carefully and save your two permitted changes for situations where they are genuinely needed.
