The three stages of becoming an ADI
The qualification process usually takes around 7 to 12 months, although individual progress and test availability vary.

Gain real experience with a trainee licence
After passing Parts 1 and 2 and completing the required training, eligible trainees can apply for a trainee driving instructor licence, often called a pink badge.
The trainee licence allows you to teach real pupils while building practical experience for your Part 3 test. It is optional, but for many trainees it provides valuable experience and an opportunity to begin earning before fully qualifying.

What makes a successful driving instructor?
Being a good driver is only one part of the job. Great instructors are reliable, patient and able to communicate clearly with people who learn in different ways.

Before beginning the process
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have held a full UK licence for at least 3 years
- Meet the DVSA driving-record requirements
- Complete the required enhanced DBS check
DVSA decides whether an applicant is suitable to join the ADI register.

How long does it take to become a driving instructor?
Many trainees qualify in around 7 to 12 months, although the exact time depends on training progress, test availability and personal commitments.
Do I need previous teaching experience?
No. Training develops the instructional, coaching and lesson- planning skills required for the role.
Can I train while working in another job?
Yes. Training can usually be arranged flexibly around existing work and family commitments.
Can I earn before passing Part 3?
Eligible trainees may apply for a trainee licence after passing Parts 1 and 2 and completing the required training.
Do I have to take a trainee licence?
No. The trainee licence is optional, although it can provide valuable teaching experience before the Part 3 test.
