How to Book Your Driving Test
The official way to book your practical driving test and manage your appointment through GOV.UK.
Driving test bookings must be managed by the learner
Only the learner taking the car driving test can book, change, swap or cancel their appointment. Driving instructors, driving schools and third-party services cannot manage the booking on the learner’s behalf.
Your instructor can still advise you about test readiness, suitable dates and use of the tuition car. Always speak to your instructor before changing your test.
Important 2026 booking rules
You can make a maximum of two changes to a car driving test appointment. When moving to another test centre, you will normally only be offered the three nearest centres to your existing booking.

Use the official GOV.UK services to book, change or cancel your driving test. Third-party websites may charge additional fees and cannot manage your booking for you under the current rules.
The official car driving-test fee is £62 on weekdays and £75 during evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
What you need to book your driving test
You must have passed your theory test before you can book a practical car driving test.
- Your UK provisional driving-licence number
- Your theory-test pass certificate number
- A credit or debit card for the official test fee
- A suitable test centre, date and time
- Your instructor’s agreement if you intend to use their tuition car
Speak to your instructor first
Finding an available appointment does not automatically mean that you are ready for the test or that your instructor’s car will be available.
Before confirming or changing a booking, check that:
- Your instructor believes you are approaching test standard
- Your instructor and tuition car are available on the chosen date
- You are familiar with the area around the chosen test centre
- You can attend the appointment without relying on an uncertain work, school or travel arrangement

Speak to your instructor
Discuss whether you are approaching test standard and agree which dates and test centres may be suitable.
Open the GOV.UK service
Use the official booking website rather than an advert, cancellation service or third-party booking company.
Enter your details
Provide your provisional licence number and theory-test pass information when requested.
Choose your test centre
Book at the centre where you genuinely intend to take the test. Moving to a different centre later is now restricted.
Select an appointment
Choose a date and time agreed with your instructor, particularly when using their car for the test.
Save the confirmation
Keep the confirmation email and check the appointment details, test centre, date and time carefully.

The DVSA booking system can be busy. Check regularly for available appointments and only change a booking when the replacement date and centre are suitable.
