Automatic Driving Lessons
Learn to drive without clutch control or manual gear changes. Build confidence with patient, experienced automatic driving instructors in selected local areas.
Focus more fully on the road ahead
Automatic cars remove the need to coordinate a clutch pedal and manual gear changes. This can make learning feel less demanding, particularly for nervous learners or those who find managing several vehicle controls at once difficult.
Your instructor will still help you develop every essential driving skill, including observation, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, independent driving and safe decision-making.
Benefits of automatic driving lessons
Automatic tuition can reduce the number of vehicle controls you need to manage while learning.
No clutch control
There is no clutch pedal to coordinate when moving away, stopping or travelling slowly.
No manual gear changes
The vehicle selects the appropriate gear, allowing you to concentrate more fully on the road.
Less chance of stalling
Automatic cars do not normally stall through incorrect clutch control, which can make busy junctions feel more manageable.
More focus on planning
With fewer controls to operate, you can devote more attention to observations, positioning and safe decisions.
Who may benefit from automatic lessons?
Nervous learners
Fewer vehicle controls can help some learners feel less overwhelmed during the early stages of driving.
Learners who have struggled with gears
Automatic tuition may help when clutch control or manual gear selection has slowed progress.
Learners returning to driving
Automatic lessons can help rebuild confidence after a long break from driving.
Learners with individual needs
Some learners find an automatic car better suited to their physical, sensory or coordination needs.
What you will learn in automatic lessons
Automatic lessons still cover the complete range of skills needed to become a safe and independent driver.

Automatic or manual driving lessons?
Fewer controls to manage
Automatic lessons remove clutch control and manual gear changes. An automatic licence normally allows you to drive automatic vehicles only.
More vehicle choice after passing
A manual licence normally allows you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles, but learning involves clutch control and manual gear selection.

Automatic driving lesson FAQs
Are automatic driving lessons easier?
Many learners find automatic cars simpler because there is no clutch pedal or manual gear selection. You must still develop safe observation, planning and decision-making skills.
Can I drive a manual car with an automatic licence?
No. A UK automatic licence normally allows you to drive automatic vehicles only. You would need to pass a manual practical test to drive manual cars.
Do automatic cars stall?
Automatic cars do not normally stall because of incorrect clutch control, although mechanical faults or other unusual circumstances can still cause the engine to stop.
How much do automatic driving lessons cost?
Our current ten-hour automatic driving lesson package costs £430, which is equivalent to £43 per hour.
Are automatic lessons available everywhere?
No. Availability depends on the automatic instructors operating in each location. Please check your postcode before purchasing lessons.
Can I take my practical test in an automatic car?
Yes. Passing the practical test in an automatic car gives you an automatic-only driving licence.
